Videos Help Duties Oversees all dental activities at the VA Finger Lakes Health Care System including the Bath VAMC, Canandaigua VAMC, and Rochester VA Outpatient Clinic dental services. The Dental Chief is the primary subject matter expert to the medical center leadership on all oral health care matters. The Dental Service Chief is responsible for planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the operation of the dental service. The Chief, Dental Service serves as a practicing dentist who performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures. Provides the administration of the Dental Service in compliance with applicable VHA, VISN, Medical Center and Dental Service Handbooks, Directives, Policies and Procedures. The duties, roles, and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:
Ensuring dental staff provides appropriate dental care to promote, preserve and restore the oral health of Veterans according to generally accepted standards of dental care and scope of services based on statutory eligibility. Rendering or assigning designee to render decisions on all Class III and Class VI eligibility determinations when the oral condition is aggravating a treated medical condition. Directing and confirming the use of the Electronic Dental Record for entry of diagnostic findings, dental care plans and completed procedures for all patients. Upholding standards for the correct documentation and coding of completed dental procedures. Reviewing dental provider panels and clinical productivity goals/expectations and managing them accordingly. Monitoring, reviewing, and implementing plans to improve dental service performance on the Office of Dentistry Dental Quality Indicators. Ensuring dental laboratory case submission requirements are met. Ensuring all prostheses are fabricated in the United States of America using materials approved by the Food and Drug Administration if commercial laboratory services are used. Ensuring the dental service follows VHA polices. Ensuring dental service compliance with the Office of Dentistry Infection Control standards for VA Dental Clinics. Ensuring dental service operational procedures and SOP's are consistent with national policies and guidelines. Enforcing personnel policies, ethical standards, and performance standards and promote the VA core values of Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect and Excellence. Ensuring all dental staff have an appropriate functional statements. Collaborating with VISN 2 Lead Dentist to ensure implementation of the VHA national policy and VISN 2 policy at the VA Medical Center. Provide regular dental service briefings to VA Medical Center facility leadership on all matters affecting delivery of dental care. Serves as the VA medical facility liaison to external dental professional organizations as well as departments within the medical center and other government agencies. Participates in the development and review of relevant sharing agreements, service agreements and inter-facility medical facility agreements. Manages the fiscal and budgetary planning activities in collaboration with Fiscal Services and the MVAC Care Line Manager as well as the ACOS of Specialites. Ensuring compliance with relevant VHA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Joint Commission standards. Assisting the VA medical facility Director in following recommendations set forth by the VA Office of the Inspector General, the Joint commission, and other survey bodies. Ensuring prompt response to assigned Congressional, White House and Inspector General dental service inquiries. Collaborating with the Office of Community Care to administer dental services provided through community care. These responsibilities include determining the eligibility of Veterans for community care, determining if the dental care recommended by the community providers is needed to promote, preserve or restore to oral health of the Veteran and is in accordance with generally acceptable standards of dental practice by reviewing for the clinical appropriateness of care provided through community care. The Dental Chief reports to the ACOS of Specialties. Work Schedule:
